FB: First week in Penang

One week in Penang, Malaysia. A thoroughly exhausting week of daily adventures and experiences! Sleep deprived with a company provided island tour covering places, customs, rules, procedures, religions, foods, driving, permanent home search and much much more. Learning the amazing culture found here is overwhelming! So many things to learn and try. The weather is hot and humid, but feels more like Florida than Hawaii. Driving on the left side of the road is a thrill ride like no other at first, but quickly becomes the norm. Though on the road when rushed I always use my turn signal lever and find I turned on the wipers instead. It's all reversed in the car. Scooters zooming in and out everywhere make you alert in ways you never knew before. But to be fair, those scooters make better time than any car here on the island (which is why Rochelle will be getting one). So far daily thunderstorms/lightning and it's not even the rainy season yet (October I'm told). Monkeys in the trees, yup, lots of 'em. The Macaques come to the ground and want food, the Langors stay in the trees and don't care. There are a myriad of temples here, everywhere, Thai, Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, Chinese, Christian, and probably many more. Street markets with foods and goods, both morning and nights. Beaches that you can't go in the water due to Box Jellyfish (the bad ones), but are beautiful. Hard for the Hawaiian in me to stay out of the water. And the food! Malay Nyonya, Thai, Indonesian, Indian, Chinese! Be bold, try something new. That's been our mantra here, don't know what it is? Don't ask, just try it!

In upcoming posts I'll cover food, cars, home search, malls and more.
