Temples, Hidden beaches, Boats & Local eats!

Our adventure continues with a visit to Kek Lok Si Temple. The huge seven level Buddhist temple that is crowned by a 120 ft bronze statue of Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy. It's an amazing complex with thousands of Buddhas placed throughout as you wander through the maze-like grounds. If you wish to see each level, be prepared to walk up many stairs. And then walk up more stairs. And then walk up even more stairs. Did I mention the stairs? Even so, it's worth experiencing.

We also travelled north on the island to visit the world’s SMALLEST national park, the Penang National Park. There are two popular beaches to visit (Monkey and Turtle beaches, respectively). You can hike to either beach through the hot and humid jungle. However, we opted to pay for the much faster and relaxing boat option. Our boat dropped us off first at Turtle Beach, a beautiful sandy beach which features a turtle rescue center (with little baby turtles swimming around in enclosures). We almost had the place to ourselves as we explored the beach jungle, however the monkeys reminded us that we weren't alone as they eyed us. Our boat returned and took us over to Monkey Beach, (about 15 minutes away), which turned out to be perfect for relaxing in the shade with a cool beverage or even swimming (Turtle beach not great for swimming, fyi). Next time we'll bring a cooler and just hang out there for some hours (since the boat captain will come back whenever you want him to). There were vendors here as well offering both food and drink, NICE!

On our drive back we stopped by our favorite roadside open air restaurant, Cafe Cendol. We had stumbled upon this place when we first moved to Penang during an exploratory drive and have returned many times since. The owner/waiter/cook/greeter is an incredibly friendly guy, who's smile just draws you in. The food is simple, and wonderful. The setting next to the busy coast road is fun, and it boasts a incredible secret hidden beach behind it! Check out the pictures!

We finish our day eating at a local Street Hawker Food Center, which is located one block from our apartment. A mind spinning selection of different cultural foods are offered here, including but not limited to: Malay Nyonya, Chinese/Hokkien, Indian & Muslim. A perfect place to try whatever you want. Low low prices and huge variety make it a foodie’s dream.
