FB: Week 2 update in Malaysia

Our week in Penang ended on a high note with a fun (albeit subdued) birthday celebration for Rochelle! It's been a relaxing day in the hotel, with swimming, online church, naps, treats and a movie. Turns out this down time ended up being exactly what the family needed after being constantly on the go, continuing to learn the ropes here in Malaysia.

Our search for long term living accommodations marches on, but we are enjoying seeing so many different areas and options. The hunt continues, which in itself is an adventure, the Price family's version of House Hunters International! It was also like the first day of school in our hotel when Rochelle started back to work at her new site, and finally met many teammates in person for the first time.

We have learned the joy of ordering take-out via ‘Grab’ delivery for local food, delivered lickity-split on those nimble fun-size motorbikes. Through it we’re able to try a huge variety of foods without risking life and limb (can’t afford to lose another limb) by going out on the roads without knowing our way around. They can get it here way faster than we can go out and order it in house. So after long days of house hunting we can relax and remove our shoes (or leg) and wait for amazing food at our door! Riot has been our resident expert in finding and trying new places. He can have food on the way before you can say ‘Hey Riot, order some…”

One morning we went driving into the hills where monkeys roam, and found a cool roadside restaurant serving local fare. Killer food in a tropical downpour was an amazing experience. I loved seeing the motorbikes riding in the deluge like it was a common occurrence, which it is!

Yesterday we hopped in a ‘Grab’ car (Malaysia’s answer to UBER) and headed to a local motorcycle dealer. She’s been talking about a motorbike or scooter since we knew we were moving here and BOOM, Rochelle doing Rochelle things. She chose a Honda 150 Scooter in blue and is ready to join that huge Malaysian motorcycle gang called ‘The COMMUTERS’ (membership tattoos and stickers to follow). But if you happen to see her riding down the road, DO NOT MAKE EYE CONTACT. You may just unleash the beast.

FYI: For those who worry, Chelle has been riding since she was a teenager, she’s a very experienced rider (and still has both legs to prove it)!

BONUS info: Malaysia kitchen sinks do not have hot water. It’s so warm here, the lukewarm water is enough to wash the dishes or shower. There is hot water for the shower, if you remember to flip the on-demand switch first. We didn’t realize this for our first lukewarm showers...
